Launching January 11, 2027 · iPhone, iPad, Android and desktop

From the field to R. One family of tools for field ecology.

Count, map, measure and sample your sites with standard methods, with or without signal. Leave a spare phone out as a camera trap or recorder. Every measured value waits for your approval, and every app shares the same projects, sites, plots and transects.

Apps*

HabitatLens is the field platform. FaunaLens and SongLens run on a second phone you leave in the field. Desktop brings everything together on your computer.

HabitatLens

The field platform. Count species, walk transects with standard methods, sample quadrats, score streams, inventory forest plots, follow restoration plantings and describe habitat with the phone's sensors, all offline. Group everything into projects, one per course, thesis or contract.

FaunaLens

Turn a spare phone into a camera trap. Motion zones that ignore moving vegetation, burst grouping, short video clips and remote viewing over WiFi. Timer mode takes a photo every few minutes from a fixed spot to follow plant phenology.

Turn a spare phone into a scheduled field recorder for birds, frogs and soundscapes. A small app of its own that asks only for what recording needs. Choose a microphone, set a schedule and leave it out; sessions go to HabitatLens or Desktop as a file or over WiFi.

HabitatLens modules

Field Counter is free. One Field subscription opens every other module, including the ones still to come. Every module shares the same projects, sites, plots and transects, so data entered in one appears in the others.

Free tier

Field Counter

Tap or voice counting with your own species libraries and photos. Time and GPS stamps; Shannon and Hill diversity.

Mapping

Sites, plots and transects created and navigated on offline topographic maps with contours.

Transect surveys

Distance sampling, belt, section, line- and point-intercept and point-centered quarter transects, and elevation profiles.

Site characterization

Terrain, soil, vegetation and water, with slope, canopy cover, tree height and more measured by the phone and saved only with your approval.

Quadrats

Random, grid or transect placement; cover classes and frequency grids; photo quadrats; a "have I sampled enough?" curve.

Stream health

Macroinvertebrate samples scored with a published biotic index, plus water chemistry and discharge in one stream record.

Forest inventory & carbon

Permanent plots, tagged and remeasured trees, LiDAR trunk diameter, mortality and recruitment, and biomass and carbon estimates from published equations.

Restoration monitoring

Tagged seedlings, survival by round, growth and causes of loss, and a PDF report for funders.

Sound

Record or import WAV files from SongLens and AudioMoth-type recorders; spectrograms and soundscape indices.

Camera traps

Import FaunaLens sessions and match each photo to its plot by GPS. In Desktop, a model pre-sorts the photos for you to confirm, and R gives activity patterns, detection rates, occupancy histories and a regression of detections on measured light.

Specimens & samples

Collection numbers that are never reused, printable QR labels, links to morphospecies, a custody trail and Darwin Core export.

Identification keys

Pick features with photos and the list of possible taxa narrows. Offline, in any language including Kichwa; built in HabitatLens Studio.

BioBlitz & class events

An organizer sets up an event, teams record, and their files merge into a species list and leaderboard, with no server.

Coming later

Sensors & probes

Readings from Bluetooth probes such as Vernier Go Direct, attached to the plot or stream you are describing.

For instructors

One file sets up the whole class.

Build the course project once, with its sites, plots, species list and forms, and share it as a class file. Every student who opens it starts with the same setup, and every module in that project is unlocked for the course. No accounts, no server, nothing for students to buy.

1. Build the project

Sites, plots, species list and protocol, on your phone or in Desktop.

2. Share the class file

Send it by email, chat or a shared folder. One file covers the whole semester.

3. Students open it

The course project appears, fully unlocked, even without signal.

4. Merge and report

Collect the backups, merge them in Desktop and hand out the R report.

Pricing

Prices in US dollars; lower prices in Ecuador. Free in every plan: export to iNaturalist, joining a class through a class file, backup and CSV export, night mode and high contrast.

Free

HabitatLens Free

Field Counter for one site, the guide and glossary, identification keys, backup and CSV export.
